Mkhwebane announced on Wednesday night that she will begin an inquiry into whether recent allegations of state capture emerging from the Gupta emails leaks have merit.
The "Gupta emails", published recently by the Sunday Times and other South African news outlets, have further exposed the relationship between President Jacob Zuma and the controversial Indian Gupta family, and the extent of the family's alleged power over South Africa.
According to the emails Joshua Dobbs Youth Jersey , believed to originate from the Guptas, the Gupta family was awarded lucrative contracts with South African state-owned enterprises (SOEs) through its close ties with Zuma and senior government officials.
In her statement on Wednesday, Mkhwebane outlined new allegations from the recent trove of emails that have been reported.
These include:
- Former Communications Minister Faith Muthambi leaked confidential information to the Guptas;
- Former Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba strategically placed two Home Affairs officials in India to benefit Gupta-run businesses through liaison with another official from the Department of Home Affairs; and
- Former Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi's allegations that former electricity utility Eskom CEO Molefe and Eskom Board Chairman Ben Ngubane had pressuri.
