College basketball season is just weeks away, and to prepare, Nike is releasing team sneakers for three of the nation's top programs. Duke, Kentucky, and the University of North Carolina players are used to getting team gear, and now fans are getting the chance to buy team-inspired nike free 5.0 Trainers. The Duke pair comes in a white, black and Game Royal colorway, while sporting team branding on the tongue, heel, and insole. The UNC sneakers follow the branding placement of the Duke pair, but use a Valor Blue, College Navy, and white colorway. The Kentucky version uses Game Royal, white, Deep Royal blue, and metallic silver, with Wildcat branding on the upper, heel, tongue, and insole.
Lighter than its predecessor, Nike’s Free 5.0 TR Fit 4 combines a very breathable Engineered Mesh upper with the flexibility and traction of the Free technology. This model however also sports a distorted print that looks very much like a collection of sneaker boxes, although that hasn’t been confirmed. Additional details include Dynamic Flywire, an inner-sleeve that wraps around the heel for a supportive fit, a durable Phylite midsole, a herringbone-patterned outsole for multi-directional traction, and more.
When Nike released the original Free line of shoes 10 years ago, it kicked off the minimalist revolution in footwear for its unprecedented flexibility and barefoot feel. While the Free 5.0 was instantly popular and became the mainstay of the line, Nike soon offered versions that featured both less and more cushioning. The new Free RN Distance, which debuts in mid-November, shares similarities to the erstwhile Free 7.0 and Free Everyday. Like its predecessors, it’s a very lightweight shoe with a snug, sock-like fit, amazing flexibility and smooth ride. The flexibility is made possible by the hexagonal-siping pattern in the rubber outsole, which allows the shoe to bend and move exactly how your foot moves. (That’s a good thing if you have strong feet and lower legs and don’t need any added stability or support.) What’s new about this shoe is the copious amount of well-balanced, moderately soft midsole cushioning and some added structure that comes from the Flywire arch support system. It’s not quite a maximalist shoe, but it kinda feels like it.
