BAT is trying to expand into alternative products, which include a tobacco heating product called Glo in Japan, as growth in conventional cigarettes slows down.
In its full-year results posted in February, BAT said it was able to halt the decline in cigarette volumes it saw in 2015 Newport Cigarettes, but had only registered a 0.2pc volume rise in 2016 Marlboro Cigarettes.
