That epic 21-play drive Before Sunday’s game again

Angeles Chargers Rookie Nick Mullens Jersey , head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the San Francisco 49ers needed to solve the problems on third down, so that they could sustain drives. Well, mission accomplished.Starting at the end of first quarter, the Niners went on a 21-play drive that took 10:44 off the clock — and still only netted three points. The Chargers didn’t get the ball back until 4:59 of the second quarter. And SF converted five third downs on a single drive. Per team PR, it was the longest 49ers drive in terms of time since 2002, when they had a 20-play, 81 yard drive that lasted 12:07 and ended with a field goal. It was the most plays in a drive since the Cleveland Browns had a 21-play drive in 2015.How do you even pull off such a long drive? You can’t just be slicing through a defense; you need to mix in some penalties or sacks to make it work. So it’s not a pure sign of greatness.With the run strength and accumulating injuries of this squad, it might be increasingly common this season. The team had a 16-play drive in the fourth quarter against Kansas City, too. I love the guy but sometimes it seems like he’s just woken up from a nap and playing in slow motion. NFL defenses move too fast for that.11) 3rd and 10, LA 43 (10:34) Eleven plays is already a pretty long drive, but it looks like the party is over. Shanny goes deep to Goodwin, who is blanketed all the way and has no chance to haul it in. (He was the one receiver, opposite trips. Did anyone not know the ball was going to him?)But wait - there’s hope! An illegal contact call here is perfect. First down, but you only advance 5 yards! Technically this is “no play” but I don’t care. I’m counting it.12) 1st and 10, LA 38 (10:27)11 plays done and the Niners have picked up four first downs but only advanced 37 yards. That is statistically almost perfect, for the slowest drive possible. A screen to Trent Taylor is a good call. It always helps to start in the backfield.

. Give it a watch here.It was not a pretty afternoon in Santa Clara. The Los Angeles Rams thoroughly pummeled the San Francisco 49ers in an ugly display. Willis posted a photo to Instagram showing him and Jackson at Crissy Field enjoying the afternoon.I don’t know if Jackson was just in town for the game or something else, but this is a fun photo. Willis is a favorite for all of us, and Jackson was one of my favorite non-49ers throughout his playing career. The good news is that cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon are good to go after full participation on Friday. The bad news is that wide receiver Marquise Goodwin and safety Jaquiski Tartt were both limited on Friday and are listed as questionable — true game-time decisions, according to Kyle Shanahan. Offensive guard Joshua Garnett has been ruled out for the game.Sherman got the Thursday rest in part just to play it safe. Witherspoon was dealing with an ankle injury that Shanahan later said probably should have resulted in an inactive status for him. Given that he went through a full practice on Friday, fingers crossed the ankle holds up against a speedy Chiefs receiver corps.Goodwin’s absence would hurt Womens Mike McGlinchey Jersey , but the 49ers are comfortable with Dante Pettis continuing in his expanded role. Week 1 Patriots vs Texans: 5 questions facing New
|
After an offseason that was arguably one of the most—if not the most—tumultuous offseasons in Patriots history under Bill Belichick Limited Shaq Mason Jersey , it’s time for the 2018 regular season to get underway today, when the Patriots host the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium at 1 P.M.Turn on local Boston sports radio stations, and you’ll witness a high level of concern among the fan base that is not often seen around these parts. Many predict New England to still make it to the AFC Championship at least, but there are a lot of question marks surrounding this team that have led to many calling into question whether the Pats will cruise through the regular season like they are accustomed to doing. With the offseason coming and going, we have gained clarity in some situations, such as Trent Brown establishing himself as the new starter at the left tackle position from Day One of training camp, but we are also left with questions, such as if the Patriots’ wide receiving corps is enough to help this offense. With that being said, let’s take a look at five questions that are facing the Patriots, as they head into their season opener, and how they can hope to answer them moving forward.1. Is the receiver corps capable of helping Tom Brady?Look, this point has been beaten into the ground by now, I get it. But that doesn’t change the fact that New England’s current stable of receivers is a huge question mark going into tomorrow. As it stands now, with Julian Edelman suspended for four games, Chris Hogan is the #1 wide receiver, and will likely assume the X-receiver position on the field. Hogan had considerable success last season in the slot, and he killed the Texans from the slot last year, as evidenced by this 47-yard touchdown catch last season. Will he able to replicate that success on the outside as the X?After Hogan, it’ll be up to Phillip Dorsett and Cordarrelle Patterson to help pick up the slack. Both had good preseasons, and Dorsett in particular looks ready to make a jump. Dorsett will most likely operate in the slot, but don’t be surprised if he takes some snaps on the outside, so Josh McDaniels can use his speed on the boundaries. McDaniels will be able to mix and match with Dorsett and Hogan, as both have experience on the outside and in the slot. With Patterson, he has shown electric flashes in the preseason, but the question is how many touches per game he will receive.There is certainly loads of big play potential with Patterson, on both offense and special teams, but expect the Patriots to pick their spots on when to take a shot with Patterson for a big play. Expect this position to be in flux, at least until Edelman returns, and possibly longer. Can Brady develop enough chemistry with Dorsett and Patterson to be able to rely on them? And can Hogan, in a contract year, prove that he is capable of being a #1-level receiver? We’ll see.2. Will rookie linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley start?One of the preseason darlings this year was fifth-round linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, from Purdue University.
